What are BCAAs?

  • Reading time: 9 min.

When, as an athlete, you talk about amino acids, you probably immediately think of BCAA. Branched Chain Amino Acids, or simply BCAAs, consist of the three essential amino acids Leucine, Isoleucine, and Valine. These are often mixed in a 2:1:1 ratio, but other ratios are also possible. Your body does not produce these essential amino acids on its own, so it’s important to obtain them from your daily diet and/or a dietary supplement.

Do you want to know more about these BCAAs? In this blog, we tell you everything about BCAA, so that you know more about the effect, benefits, recommended use, and where you can buy the best BCAA powder!

BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids)

BCAA stands for Branched-Chain Amino Acids, or in other words, branched-chain amino acids. These are the three amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine. When you engage in strength training, your body uses these amino acids to help muscles recover. BCAAs are the key building blocks of proteins, which contribute to the maintenance and building of muscle mass.

Getting enough protein, and therefore BCAAs, is crucial for your results in the gym. Are you not getting enough protein from your diet? Then a supplement with BCAAs is an excellent choice for you!

Leucine, isoleucine, and valine

A BCAA powder always consists of the combination of leucine, isoleucine, and valine (3 essential amino acids). Since your body cannot produce these BCAAs on its own, it’s important to obtain enough from your diet. You do this by eating protein-rich foods. Especially protein sources such as fish, meat, legumes, eggs, cheese, and milk contain a lot of branched-chain amino acids.

Leucine is the amino acid most involved in protein synthesis. Isoleucine and valine seem to be more effective in energy production.

Especially when your protein intake is too low, or when you do not eat certain (animal) products, there is a chance that you are not getting enough BCAAs. A good solution for this is the use of a BCAA supplement, in powder form or capsule form.

What is the effect of BCAA?

Your body uses the amino acids leucine, valine, and isoleucine for various physiological processes. BCAA plays a role in protein synthesis, making BCAA powder popular among strength athletes. Furthermore, BCAAs are strongly represented in your muscles. Together, they make up about 14-18% of the amino acids in your muscles and even 35-40% of all amino acids in your body.

BCAAs serve an important function as the building blocks of proteins for muscle tissue. Proteins contribute to the maintenance of muscle mass, as well as the growth and repair of muscles after physical exertion. Additionally, proteins are beneficial for the skeleton.

Benefits of BCAAs:

  • BCAAs support the building of muscle tissue
  • BCAAs help maintain muscle mass
  • BCAAs are good for the skeleton

BCAA 2:1:1 or 4:1:1?

BCAAs in powder form are often used during training. Aside from being a tasty sports drink, BCAAs provide your body with nutrients so you can give your all during your workout. We offer two variants of BCAA powder: one with a 2:1:1 ratio and one with a 4:1:1 ratio. The difference between the two powders lies in the ratio of leucine to isoleucine and valine. Supplements with the 4:1:1 ratio contain more leucine, which is thought to have a greater effect on muscle building. However, research shows that BCAA 2:1:1 is the best ratio. While leucine plays the largest role in protein synthesis, isoleucine and valine also play important roles in recovery. If you take a BCAA supplement with a 4:1:1 or even 8:1:1 ratio, the dosage of isoleucine and valine is too low.

BCAA supplementation for vegan athletes:

Vegans often consume fewer essential amino acids because they avoid animal proteins. Plant-based foods generally have a less complete amino acid profile compared to animal products. A BCAA supplement can be valuable in such cases. However, it’s important to ensure that other amino acids are also consumed in sufficient amounts. Other options include protein powders based on soy protein or pea protein, which come close in terms of amino acid profile.

Does BCAA have side effects?

As far as we know, the use of BCAAs has no side effects or negative effects on daily life. We always recommend getting as much protein as possible from a healthy and varied diet before considering supplements.

Only athletes with the rare condition Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD), or maple syrup disease, should limit their intake of BCAAs. Their bodies cannot break down these amino acids properly, which can result in a buildup of isoleucine, leucine, and valine, leading to brain damage.

For BCAAs and other amino acids in supplement form, we should note that they are not directly necessary if you get enough protein from your diet. Are you getting enough protein with a complete amino acid profile? Then you are also getting enough leucine, isoleucine, and valine, making BCAA powder of little added value.

Disadvantages of BCAAs:

  • Not suitable for people with Maple Syrup Urine Disease
  • Little added value with high protein intake from food

When to take BCAA?

Although there’s no “wrong” time to take BCAA, most athletes choose to take it just before, during, or right after their workout. These are the times when the body is thought to be most receptive to these amino acids, absorbing them better. However, more research is needed to determine if the exact timing of BCAA intake makes a significant difference in its effect.
