Is Pre Workout bad for you?

  • Reading time: 9 min.

Although Pre Workouts do not contain banned substances, there are people who think that using a Pre Workout is bad for you. But how exactly does this work?

It is difficult to say whether pre-workout supplements are "bad" for everyone, as their effect on the body depends on various factors, including the composition of the supplement, the dosage, and the individual's reaction to the supplement. The Pre Workout ingredients themselves are intended to support performance.

However, there are also risks associated with using pre-workout supplements, especially when taken in excessive dosages. Some possible side effects include heart palpitations, high blood pressure, stomach issues, sleep problems, and anxiety. At XXL Nutrition, we are happy to give you advice on how to use a Pre Workout wisely and provide answers to the question of whether Pre Workout is bad for you.

Pre Workout disadvantages and side effects

Before we can say anything about whether Pre Workout is bad for you, we need to look at the potential side effects. Which side effects occur depends on the Pre Workout ingredients used.

Pre workout supplements usually contain a combination of ingredients such as caffeine, creatine, beta-alanine, B vitamins, amino acids, and other stimulants. The effects of these ingredients vary, but most are intended to improve athletic performance by increasing endurance and boosting muscle strength. These are all safe substances, but in excessive dosages, they can have some side effects.

  • Caffeine is one of the main ingredients in pre workouts and is a well-known stimulant. It can improve alertness and concentration and reduce fatigue. But caffeine can also have side effects, such as nervousness, anxiety, heart palpitations, and sleep disorders.
  • Creatine is another common ingredient in pre workouts and can help increase muscle strength and muscle mass. It is naturally produced in the body and is found in foods like meat and fish. However, using creatine supplements can have side effects, such as stomach pain, diarrhoea, and muscle cramps.
  • Beta-alanine is an amino acid that can help reduce fatigue and improve endurance. But it can also have side effects, such as tingling and itching. However, these tingles are not dangerous for you.
  • Other ingredients commonly found in pre workouts include B vitamins, which are important for healthy metabolism and energy production, and amino acids, which can support muscle growth and recovery. However, these ingredients can also have side effects, such as stomach issues and nausea.

In most cases, as an athlete, you won’t experience unpleasant side effects from Pre Workouts. Are you taking too high a dosage or are you sensitive to certain ingredients? Then you may experience the aforementioned effects.

Pre Workouts with too much caffeine

Most strength athletes take a Pre Workout supplement for the energy boost. These products contain stimulants, with caffeine being the most popular. Caffeine is not bad for you, but there is a risk of consuming too much caffeine with a Pre Workout, especially if you also drink coffee, tea, or energy drinks during the day.

But what is too much? It is recommended not to consume more than 400 mg of caffeine per day. Does your Pre Workout Booster already contain 300 mg of caffeine per scoop? Then you're already nearing your upper limit. If you drink coffee, you will quickly exceed this limit.

Too much caffeine per day can have various negative effects. Especially if you take a Pre Workout later in the evening, you may experience these effects. It can disrupt your sleep by increasing the time it takes to fall asleep.

It also reduces the quality of your sleep. Additionally, it can cause feelings of restlessness. This is because caffeine stimulates the production of adrenaline. This hormone is involved in the body's stress response.

Other side effects that strength athletes may experience after consuming a high dose of caffeine include stomach and intestinal problems, such as stomach cramps, diarrhoea, and heartburn.

Some people are sensitive to caffeine. When they take a Pre Workout with a lot of caffeine, they can suffer from a strong reaction. This can manifest as heart palpitations, nausea, anxiety, insomnia, and trembling. For these athletes, we recommend taking a Pre Workout without caffeine or other stimulants.

Pre Workout not recommended for children

Has your child come home with a jar of pre workout? As a parent, it’s important to take a critical look at this. In general, we advise against the use of these types of stimulant supplements for young people, as pre workouts often contain very high doses of caffeine.

Although caffeine can have a stimulating effect and a positive impact on athletic performance in adults, the advice for young people is to have no more than one caffeine-rich drink per day. The advice for children under 13 years of age is to avoid caffeine entirely. Therefore, we do not consider the use of pre workout to be safe for children. They may experience various symptoms such as restlessness, sleep problems, and stomach and intestinal issues. While the latter isn’t dangerous, it is certainly unpleasant.

Moreover, most children and young people don’t need stimulant supplements for their training. They have enough energy for exercising, and the disadvantages of using such supplements outweigh the benefits.

Doping in Pre Workout Booster?

Sometimes Pre Workouts contain a so-called ‘proprietary blend’. This is a mix of ingredients where the exact composition is not disclosed. Some athletes worry that this might include doping or other dangerous substances. In the Netherlands, there’s no need to worry. Our products are carefully tested and monitored to ensure no illegal substances are included.

However, with foreign pre workout boosters, it’s possible that doping-like substances may be present. For example, some Pre Workouts contain dimethylamylamine (DMAA). The safety of this substance has not been established, and it is listed as a banned substance by the Netherlands Doping Authority and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

At XXL Nutrition, we only sell clean and safe Pre Workouts, free from dangerous additives. Our range of Pre Workouts is thoroughly checked, and the exact composition of all products is clearly indicated on the label. So, you know exactly what you’re consuming. Are you a top athlete and subject to doping tests? Then buy a Pre Workout with the NZVT logo. These are approved by the Dutch Security System for Nutritional Supplements in Elite Sports.

Is Pre Workout bad for your heart?

Some people are concerned about the effects of Pre Workout on your heart. But when used normally (by healthy athletes), a Pre Workout is not bad for your heart. The ingredients in a pre workout booster do not have harmful effects on your cardiovascular health.

The stories circulating about heart problems caused by Pre Workout use are not based on facts. With normal use, the caffeine in a Pre Workout will not cause heart palpitations (or arrhythmias). These issues can arise when athletes take far too high a dosage or have pre-existing heart conditions. Therefore, it is essential to use a Pre Workout with common sense.

Follow the usage instructions on the label and do not take 3 scoops when it states to take only 1 scoop. If you have heart complaints or are sensitive to caffeine, it’s generally advised not to take such supplements.

Conclusion: Pre Workout is safe when used normally
